Hello!  My name is Tweeny and I am a florist,  a letterpress printer, and a lover of handmade crafts. I’m also a soon to be mama and a needs-improvement-surfer!  I live in Santa Monica with my high school sweetheart and life partner, Josh, as well as our dog Salt.  I hold a Ph.D. in Biological Chemistry and Molecular Pharmacology, but more importantly, a certificate in Floral Design from the New York Botanical Garden!  In my previous life, I worked as a cancer biologist and a clerk at my parents’ Hallmark store in the suburbs of Northern Virginia.

Officially founded in 2007, The Flower Lab is a floral design studio specializing in wedding and event floristry.  It is currently run from a home based studio, but I am on the constant lookout for the perfect beach bungalow to house the perfect floral and letterpress studio!

Many people ask me why I decided to leave science to pursue flowers! Well, it definitely was not an easy decision to make and probably took about 2 years for me to really really make up my mind. Although working in the lab afforded me a certain amount of autonomy, I also just wanted to be my own boss and run my own thing. After doing experiments for so many years as a student and then a post-doctoral researcher, I borrowed a line from my sister and said to myself, “Life is too short!”. I had always enjoyed art and design and creating things with my hands and after helping my best friend with her wedding flowers, could begin to imagine a different life with flowers and brides and grooms. So now I’m enjoying my “new” life setting my own pace and pursuing all my random interests! I have learned a lot and sometimes my training as a scientist actually comes in handy. Starting a small business has been a challenge as well as a lot of fun! I thoroughly enjoy meeting all my clients and becoming friends with them.
